Job Satisfaction

Job Satisfaction is something that so many of us strive for in life. I have had many jobs over the last (many) years. In every one, with the exception of one, I have found a high level of satisfaction. Even as I continue to write this I am not sure which Job that one really was.

Job Satisfaction is more a matter of mind over matter, or making the best of it. If you have prepared your self to get into a career, IE education, a bit of luck, experience and such. You sometimes need to make the best of the situation, you sometimes need to realize that perhaps things are not as bad on you may think.

I work with several individuals that do not know Job Satisfaction. Player "A" has worked this job long before I joined the group. They feel as though the job has passed them by, they try, but I am not sure how hard they try, and still have trouble keeping up. My lead continually prods me to assist player "A". I have, at times gotten frustrated with this. As you may have deduced I work with Cisco equipment, from hubs, switches, routers to Firewalls, PIX, and FWSM. As you read through the list it gets more complicated. Player "A" is ok with hubs and switches, had trouble with routers, and my lead want me to "train" them on the firewalls and such. Thus the reason for my frustration is that player "A" in my opinion is not capable of working on Firewalls.

I only just learned the Cisco PIX environment, and have done so by self motivation. I have picked up books, looked for classes, ask questions of those in the know. Player "A" has only taken the classes that they have been forced to take, been lost in the class and refused to ask any questions so as not to hold up the rest of the class!!! WHAT?? You job requires that you know this and you are afraid to ask a question!!! You have failed to properly prepare for the class ahead of time and now while in it you are too embarrassed to ask a question? There is no wonder why player "A" has no job satisfaction.

Now Player"A" is a really nice person, and I put forth an effort to "train" them on the times that I can, and they do learn better in a one-on-one environment. Player "A" should not be unhappy with the job that they hold, after all they are getting paid pretty good money to do a job that they are not qualified to do. Player "A" could be qualified if they put forth some personal time to study. Instead Player "A" job satisfaction is low, and they go through each day in a gray mood hoping for it to end. Player "A" is so dissatisfied that they have tried to secure a new job. But they are not able to locate a job that pays this good for someone that does not have the experience in the field that they are looking.....(carpentry, Tile layer, general construction).

Player "A" has such job dissatisfaction that they have strongly encouraged their own kids to avoid the IT job field altogether??? Now there are many reasons to dissuade your children from taking a certain job path, I however don't agree with that one.

Until next time
