Appeasing Management

Sometimes at work you need to Appease Management and do the things that you do not believe need to be done at that point in time. I am just getting home from work for just that reason.

It took me too long to figure out that I have a Spanning-Tree Issue. The issue was causing a few servers some problems and I moved them to another switch that had the same VLAN.

What I missed was two things:
1. None of the servers had Portfast enabled
2. I did a show spanningtree detail but failed to notice that my Vlan had topology change and pointed to the port causing the issue.

When I finally got a grip on what was going on, the servers had remained stable for a few hours, the customer was quite happy about it and did not want to affect the servers until after his unit ran the production work for Sunday Night successfully.

I was starting to track down my suspect port, I determined that the switch was not in the same building as the original switch (or me). there for I was not going to be able to do too much at 8PM on a Saturday night.

Just then my management called and this is when the appeasement started. He wanted me to stay and work the problem out to resolution. I tested Fiber as far as I could, I believed that the problem was at the other site or the interconnecting fiber between buildings.

I don't have access, but our dispatch vendor does, our Sunday Staff does. I was willing to pass this off to the next shift as they have access and I don't. Also a dispatch of our vendor is expensive at Midnight on a holiday weekend!! Management wanted them dispatched and while I wait they wanted the source port replaced.

This is where Cisco screwed up, MTRJ card for Cisco ws-6224-100FX-MT don't have replaceable GBIC you have to replace the entire card....on a production machine...I spent time trying to find how to shut down the card before I pulled it.

from configure terminal prompt...no power enable shutdown....now that really sounds like it shuts down the card doesn't it???

Now I have been working with the night shift, there are four of them, during the day it is just me on Saturdays?!?!?

We replace the card, dispatch our vendor only to find out, when we get there, that NO-ONE has access to the closet with the other switch in it. AARRGGG!!!!!

Finally management give the go-ahead to go home and have Sunday Staff follow up.
