Players who have suffered concussions

Safety Michael Lewis 49ers Lewis picked up his third concussion since Aug. 18.
Linebacker Jeff Ulbrich 49ers, Ulbrich said Monday he's not ruling out retirement after sustaining more concussions during his career than he can count.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- It's only been three years since Florida quarterback Chris Leak stood at a lectern and claimed a vicious hit from Georgia defensive tackle Jeff Owens hadn't resulted in a concussion. "I just got dinged," Leak said. "No more than that."

Had Gators coach Urban Meyer known then what he knows now about concussions, Leak's backup, Tim Tebow, might have started his first college game as a freshman. Coincidentally, the player who backed up Leak in 2006 has become the face of major college football's relatively new, more medically sound approach to concussion recovery.

Tate Forcier Michiagan There's obviously a risk that comes with returning to the field so soon after a concussion, and Michigan doesn't need Forcier to beat Delaware State. But if he's medically cleared, the game provides a good opportunity for him to regain some momentum on offense after consecutive losses.

It should come as no surprise that Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard started working his way back into shape as soon as he was given the green light last week.

The surprise?

"He's been boxing," general manager Chuck Fletcher said.

Huh?

Isn't this the guy who went out with a concussion?

Taking shots to the head?

"I don't know if anyone dared hit him in the head," Fletcher said with a laugh.

The Wild's heavyweight champion, the 6-foot-7, 258-pound Boogaard suffered a concussion during an exhibition game Sept. 18 and has been sidelined since. He said he needed to get back into shape and wasn't ready to skate, so he climbed into the ring.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has had seven concussions since his high school days in Oregon, several at Southern California, yet he remains one of the game's best defensive players. His latest concussion occurred last year against the Giants.
